Well, the gallery of pictures would go on, so I guess I should start with what I actually wrote this post for. So, how all of this actually started? How those frock suits came back as Anarkali Suits?

Well, let me start from what an Anarkali Suit actually is? An Anarkali Suit is a combination of a long kurta and bottoms that are usually in the form of churidaar. The length of the kurta varies according to a person’s choice. Nowadays, floor length Anarkali Suits are in trend. The kurta is fitted on the bust and have long plates just like an umbrella. I remember, my mom used to call these umbrella suits and I had one of orange color when I was in 6th standard.

Did you ever think where the name came from?

Well, Anarkali which actually means pomegranate blossom was a legendary slave girl from Lahore (Pakistan) during the empire of Akbar. She was dancer at the palace of the great Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar.  It is said that the eldest son of Akbar – Salim fell in love with Anarkali and when the emperor came to know about this, he ordered to bury Anarkali alive for having a relationship with his son. But due to the lack of evidence, some people call this as a false story but this story is greatly believed by Bollywood I guess.

At the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar, a dance form called mujra was quite famous. Many famous dancers used to dance at the palace of Mughal Kings. The dresses which were worn by the mujra dancers at that time were known as mujra dresses. Later the name got converted to Anarkali Dresses or Anarkali Suits in the rememberance of the great dancer and a passionate love of Mughal time – Anarkali.

In the above picture, I have worn an Anarkali Suit with a heavy border and teamed it with minimum accessories – just a pair of earings, a ring and a bracelet.

If you are thinking of buying an Anarkali Suit, you must keep in mind these tips:

  1. Always team the Anarkali Suit with a tight chudidaar or cotton slacks. Its a big NO NO for salwars, harems and patialas.

  2. Anarkali Suit should be less fitted at the bust. Show off your bust with some other attire like Saree. Anarkalis are better for showing off a good neckline.

  3. Make sure your Floor length Anarkali Suit is not longer than the floor length.

  4. If you have a heavy bust, don’t go with chinese collars.

  5. If you have slim to hourglass figure, go for heavy flares.

  6. If the suit is heavily embroidered, go for light jewellery and vice versa.

Don’t forget to tell me if you liked this post. I am waiting for your feedback.

  1. Hi,

I bought one Anarkali suit from you. Material of the cloth was poly Georgette. I gave it for stitching to a designer (boutique). When I got it stitched the flares were not at all proper. I asked the reason to the designer, she told me dat the border was not in accordance with the taper of the anarkali pattern rather the border is vertically straight. I tried a lot to get it correct but she told its manufacturing problem of the border of the suit. After stitching the suit’s flares are very stiff and straight and alternate flares are coming out giving it a very bad look. I have to hide it with dupatta. I request you to please tell me if the problem is with the material or the designer. I thought of buying few more suits but now dropped the idea after seeing my suit.

    • Mam, all the suits which we produce are properly checked for their quality. But still, tell us the product code of the suit you bought. We will ask some other customers who bought the same suit so as to know if the problem is with suit or with the designer.
